چکیده

This paper describes stratospheric waves in ERA5 reanalysis and evaluates the contributions of different types to driving quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). Because its higher spatial resolution compared predecessors, is capable resolving a broader spectrum waves. It shown that resolved contribute both eastward westward accelerations near equator, mainly by way vertical flux zonal momentum. The are due Kelvin small-scale gravity (SSG) with wavelengths smaller than 2000 km, whereas forced SSG waves, from inertio-gravity mixed-Rossby-gravity Extratropical Rossby propagate into tropical region impart acceleration flow. They appear be responsible for at least some irregularities QBO cycle.

Constraints on Wave Drag Parameterization Schemes for Simulating the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. Part I: Gravity Wave Forcing

Parameterization schemes for the drag due to atmospheric gravity waves are discussed and compared in the context of a simple one-dimensional model of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). A number of fundamental issues are examined in detail, with the goal of providing a better understanding of the mechanism by which gravity wave drag can produce an equatorial zonal wind oscillation. The gravit...

Forcing of the quasi-biennial oscillation from a broad spectrum of atmospheric waves

[1] The circulation of the stratosphere, and its influence on the trace constituent distribution, is an important component of the climate system, which must be included in simulations of global climate change. However, the ability to simulate a dominant stratospheric phenomenon, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) in equatorial zonal wind, is an outstanding challenge in climate modeling. Alth...

Constraints on Wave Drag Parameterization Schemes for Simulating the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. Part II: Combined Effects of Gravity Waves and Equatorial Planetary Waves

This study examines the effect of combining equatorial planetary wave drag and gravity wave drag in a one-dimensional zonal mean model of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). Several different combinations of planetary wave and gravity wave drag schemes are considered in the investigations, with the aim being to assess which aspects of the different schemes affect the nature of the modeled QBO...

Kinetic Energy and Quasi-biennial Oscillation

The modulation of the vertical flux of kinetic energy to the stratosphere by the pressure-work effect at 100 mb is compared with variations in the hemispheric kinetic cnergy, the horizontal momentum and heat transports a t “low” latitudes, and the tropical zonal wind and temperature for the lower stratosphere. It is deduced that the variation of the vertical flux of geopotential is in phase wit...

Revisiting the Influence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation on Tropical Cyclone Activity

The statistical relationship between the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and tropical cyclone (TC) activity is explored, with a focus on the North Atlantic. Although there is a statistically significant relationship between the QBO and TCs in the Atlantic from the 1950s to the 1980s, as found by previous studies, that relationship is no longer present in later years. Several possibilities for ...
